Understanding the OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification
If you're in the construction industry or planning to join it, you've likely heard of the OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification. But what exactly is it, and why is it essential for your workers, especially those in a supervisory role? In this blog, we'll break down the basics of this certification, what it includes, who it's for, and the benefits it offers.
What is OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification?
The OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification is a training program designed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to promote safety and health awareness among construction industry professionals. It's an extended version of the OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification, providing more in-depth knowledge and skills. It provides a variety of training to workers with some safety responsibility and emphasizes hazard identification, avoidance, control, and prevention, not OSHA standards.
What's Included in the Certification?
The OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification covers a wide range of topics crucial to maintaining a safe working environment on construction sites.
Some key areas of focus include:
Introduction to OSHA.
This covers workers' rights, employer responsibilities and how to file a complaint. It includes helpful worker safety and health resources. It also provides a sample weekly fatality and catastrophe report, a safety data sheet and the OSHA Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses (OSHA Form 300).
Managing Safety and Health.
This includes Injury and Illness Prevention Programs, job site inspections, accident prevention programs, management commitment and employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control, accident investigations, how to conduct safety meetings, and supervisory communication.
Personal Protective and Lifesaving Equipment.
OSHA Focus Four Hazards.
This includes Falls, Electrocution, Struck-by (e.g., falling objects, trucks, cranes), and Caught-In or Between (e.g., trench hazards, equipment).
Stairways and Ladders.
Electives, which could include any combination of the following:
Concrete and Masonry Construction.
Confined Space Entry
Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Elevators and Conveyors
Ergonomics
Excavations
Fire Protection and Prevention
Materials Handling, Storage, Use and Disposal
Motor Vehicles, Mechanized Equipment and Marine Operations; Rollover Protective Structures and Overhead Protection; and Signs, Signals and Barricades.

How Long Does It Take to Complete?
The OSHA 30-hour construction course takes a minimum of 30 hours to complete.
Is OSHA 30-Hour Certification Mandatory?
No. OSHA does not require it. However, some construction sites and employers may require it for supervisors.
How Long is the Certification Valid?
The OSHA 30-Hour Certification does not have an expiration date. However, it's recommended to refresh supervisors’ knowledge every five years or so to stay current with safety regulations and best practices.
Where can I find a qualified trainer?
You can always reach out to your construction community and see who your peers use, or visit OSHA’s outreach trainers webpage and do a search for local instructors.
How many students can I fill a class with?
I recommend a class size between 15 and 20 for the best student experience. This will allow it to be interactive, and provide a lot of group discussion, practical experiences and makes for a more fun environment. If that is not possible, I allow up to 30 students so that I can manage the class. If additional managment is present, I may allow up to 40. But those are my standards and are higher than what OSHA requires.
What does OSHA require? OSHA limits an OSHA 30-hour class to a maximum of 40 students. Unless of course, you want to sign your workers up for an online class.
Can I sign workers up to take the Course Online?
Yes, OSHA-approved online courses are available for the OSHA 30-Hour Certification in Construction. These online courses offer convenience and flexibility, allowing workers to learn at their own pace. I recommend ClickSafety.
