Keeping Safe in Construction: How to Make Sure Everyone wears PPE

By Safety Culture Pro

Construction work can be risky, but there's a way to stay safe: by wearing the right safety gear. This gear is called Personal Protective Equipment or PPE. Sometimes, getting everyone to wear it can be tricky. But if you're in charge, here are 10 ways to help people use PPE and stay safe.

1.Explain why PPE Is Super Important

PPE might seem like extra stuff you have to wear, but it's like a protective shield that keeps you safe from danger. It's crucial to explain to everyone why they need to wear it. Share stories of how PPE saved people from getting hurt.

2. Be a Role Model

If you're the boss or a leader, you need to lead by example. Show everyone that wearing PPE is a must. When they see you wearing it, they'll understand that everyone needs to wear it too.

3. Teach and Show

People might not know how to use PPE properly. That's why you should teach them. Show them how to put on and use the different gear. Use pictures or videos to explain. This way, they'll know what to do.

4. Ask for Help

People know their work best. Ask them which PPE they find comfy and easy to use. When you listen to their ideas, they'll be more likely to use the gear.

5. Say "Good Job!"

When you catch someone wearing their PPE, give them a thumbs up. You can also give small rewards or certificates. This makes them feel good and encourages others to wear their gear too.

6. Make PPE Easy to Get

If PPE is easy to find, people will use it more. Put the gear in places where they can grab it quickly. This way, they won't have to search for it.

7. Help Each Other

Tell everyone to remind their buddies to wear PPE. When they look out for each other, everyone stays safe together.

8. Listen to their ideas

Let people share if they're not comfortable with some PPE. If they have ideas to make it better, listen to them. This shows that you care about their opinions.

9. Check and Talk

Check if everyone is wearing their gear sometimes. If they're not, don't get mad. Talk to them and find out why. This helps fix any problems and keeps everyone safe.

10. Keep Going

Making a big change takes time. Keep telling everyone how important PPE is. Be consistent and keep talking about it. Eventually, wearing PPE will become a normal thing.

In the end, making sure everyone wears PPE isn't too hard. Just teach, show, and encourage. When everyone understands that safety gear is like a protective shield, they'll want to use it. And remember, safety is a team effort – let's keep each other safe.

I’ll see you out there!
